Helping others—in whatever way works for you—is a central part of spiritual life. We offer many different ways to get involved.
Backpack Buddies—Perfect if you have an hour and appreciate some social time with fellow congregants. We need volunteers weekly to pack backpacks with food. This activity takes about 45 minutes on Wednesday mornings starting at 9:00 AM. We coordinate weeks with the Religious School, which participates as part of its curriculum at least once a month.
CRS Men’s Homeless Shelter—When you volunteer to spend a night at CRS in our Men’s Shelter, you are providing immediate, in-the-moment assistance for someone who has nowhere else to sleep. We provide a safe and warm place for 8 houseless men to sleep per night. Shifts are done by two people at a time—you may sign up alone and someone else will sign up as well, or you and a friend can sign up together.
St. Xavier’s Soup Kitchen—This is something you might enjoy doing with your teen, and has the satisfaction of working within a community in need. We require volunteers on the dates below to help prepare and serve meals to visitors at the St. Xavier’s Soup Kitchen in Chelsea. All volunteers must be over the age of 14; under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
Days for Girls—Help empower girls and women at this once-a-month program for Days for Girls, a grassroots non-profit organization that makes and distributes re-usable, sustainable feminine hygiene kits to over one million women and girls worldwide. All are welcome to help create kits for girls and women in New York City, around the country, and abroad. You do not need to know how to sew to participate. Run by Sisterhood, this is a great parent-and-child (age 11+) opportunity. No registration required.
Mitzvah Weekend—Want to try something new? Meet people? Not sure what you’d really enjoy? For the past 20 years, CRS produces a weekend of social action and volunteering.
