Erev Shabbat Service: Special Guest Dr. Nachman Shai, Former Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Dean of HUC-JIR Israel Campus

Fri, May 3 • 6:00 PM7:00 PM

IN PERSON & ONLINE

On this Shabbat Rodeph Sholom will welcome Dr. Nachman Shai, Former Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs and the newly-appointed Dean of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem. Its programs educate and prepare Israeli rabbis to pioneer religious pluralism in Israel and serve the global Jewish people.

Dr. Shai, a lifelong public servant and scholar, has led a career focused on connecting communities within, across, and beyond Israel in support of the global Jewish community. He was a member of the Knesset from 2009-2019 and then held the role of Minister of Diaspora Affairs—one of Israel’s leading diplomatic positions—in 2021 and 2022. In the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years, he was a visiting faculty member at Emory and Duke universities, respectively. Dr. Shai is currently a visiting professor at the University of Haifa. Read more about the historic importance of Dr. Shai’s appointment here.

We will commemorate Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) during this Erev Shabbat service, which will also feature music sung by the TBB’ers (Tenor/Baritone/Basses) from the Singers Workshops of Columbia University Teachers College.

Share Shabbat with family, friends—old ones and new—and community. Join us for meaningful Shabbat worship, study and hospitality.

Each Friday evening the Rodeph Sholom community joins together to welcome Shabbat in a joyful service of prayer, music, and moments of quiet contemplation. Our Erev Shabbat service is a perfect way to end the week and begin recharging for the week ahead.

Everyone is welcome—no membership is necessary.
