The Last Kings of Shanghai: The Rival Jewish Dynasties That Helped Create Modern China by Jonathan Kaufman

With over 35 years of writing, Jonathan Kaufman is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist (twice winning the Prize and twice being a finalist) and author. He has been honored with a National Jewish Book Award, a National Headliner Award, Unity in Media Award, Columbia University School of Journalism School Award (twice), an Overseas Press Club Award, and several other awards, too numerous to list in this space.

The Last Kings of Shanghai is an epic, multigenerational story of two rival dynasties – the Sassoons and the Kadoories – who flourished in Shanghai and Hong Kong as twentieth-century China surged into the modern era. In a story stretching from Baghdad to Hong Kong to Shanghai to London, Kaufman enters the lives and minds of these ambitious men and women to forge a tale of opium smuggling, family rivalry, political intrigue and survival.

Book Club gathers once a month to discuss literature (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or plays) written by a Jewish author or with a theme of Jewish interest. Meetings are self-moderated and led by different members each month. The group nominates and selects their reading material. Every meeting provides spirited conversation and a chance to learn in a stimulating environment.
