Beginning in 1986, in cooperation with Women In Need Inc (now renamed WIN), Congregation Rodeph Sholom worked on behalf of WIN, in a social action program funded by contributions to the Rodeph Sholom Food Drive (formerly named Project Moving On). WIN provides temporary shelter and support services for families (usually mothers with children) until they are ready to leave WIN shelters and move to permanent housing.
Every month WIN at Rodeph Sholom provides at least five of these WIN families with cartons of food and kitchen supplies as they move to their new homes. Tucked into the cartons as well are gifts of books, toys and clothing for the children, donated by Rodeph Sholom families. To date, the program has helped more than 3,500 families, including more than 6,000 children.
Volunteers are needed for:
1) Packing boxes for families – two volunteers are needed, twice a month for about 2 hours. Adults or mature teens welcome. Takes places on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, but flexible as to timing during the day or in the evening until the synagogue closes.
2) Shelving groceries and donations: once a month, groceries are purchased and need to be put on the shelves. Takes approximately one hour. One or two volunteers are needed.
3) Sorting and shelving of toys and clothes: several times a year, volunteers are needed to go through donations and place them on the shelves. One or two volunteers are needed
