Helping others–in whatever way works for you–is a central part of spiritual life. We offer many different ways to get involved.
Backpack Buddies-Perfect if you have an hour and appreciate some social time with fellow congregants. For Backpack Buddies, we need four volunteers weekly to pack backpacks with food. This activity takes about 45 minutes and occurs on Wednesday mornings starting at 9:00AM. We coordinate weeks with the Religious School, which participates as part of its curriculum at least once a month.
St. Xavier’s Soup Kitchen—This is something you might enjoy doing with your teen, and has the satisfaction of working within a community in need. We require 14 volunteers one Sunday a month from November-June to help prepare and serve meals to visitors at the St. Xavier’s Soup Kitchen in Chelsea. All volunteers must be over the age of 14, and children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
CRS Men’s Shelter—When you volunteer to spend a night at CRS in our Men’s Shelter, you are providing immediate, in-the-moment assistance for someone who has no where to sleep. We provide a safe and warm place for 8 homeless men to sleep per night. We are especially looking for people who would consider doing this for one night during the winter months. Shifts are done by two people-you may sign up alone and someone else will sign up as well, or you and a friend can sign up together.
Women in Need (WIN)—Help welcome someone home! WIN provides families transitioning from shelters to permanent housing with cartons of food and kitchen supplies, plus clothing, books and toys for children, as they move to their new homes. This program needs volunteers to help sort and shelve donations and then pack cartons for families. If you would like to volunteer, write to email@example.com.
Mitzvah Weekend—Want to try something new? Meet people? Not sure what you’d really enjoy? Every autumn for the past 20 years, Rodeph Sholom produces a big day of social action and volunteering. On this days, we do mitzvot both at our building and in our community. We clean parks, paint walls, spend time with seniors, pack food for our local food bank. We send out information to our members for the event in early fall.
Congregation Rodeph Sholom uses a third-party site to streamline registration for many of our volunteer opportunities – from our Backpack Buddies program, to staffing the shelter, to serving at the soup kitchen, there is an activity for everyone.
