During World War II, thousands of Jews fleeing the Nazi regime were denied visas on the grounds that spies that could cause a threat to our national security might be among the refugees. History is repeating itself.
Now people are urging our government to deny Syrians asylum because terrorists may lurk among them. The refugee vetting process is a long and meticulous process. It aims to ensure that a person seeking asylum is entitled to refugee status and will not pose a threat to our country. As Jews, we understand the importance of providing safe havens for persecuted people.
The Torah commands: “The stranger who sojourns with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Lev. 19:33). Now is the time uphold our values.
