Our country IS facing a national emergency – President Trump’s abuse of power.
The United States Constitution sets forth the powers of each branch of government. Congress has the power of the purse, deciding how our tax dollars will be spent, and it is a check on the power of the executive branch. On February 15, 2019, Congress approved $1.375 billon to construct new fencing on 55 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. The President was unhappy with this allocation. So to circumvent Congress, he declared a national emergency that enables him to divert funds from other agencies, mostly the Defense Department, for his border wall project. Upon declaring the emergency, the President admitted to his ploy by stating, “I could do the wall over a longer period of time. I didn’t need to do this [national emergency]. But I’d rather do it much faster.”* The President also falsely stated, “We have an invasion of drugs and criminals coming into our country.”* In fact, 80% of drugs and human trafficking victims arrive in the United States through official points of entry.**
The “national emergency” is nothing more than an illegal power grab. The House of Representatives voted to block the President’s border emergency declaration.
