Justice Cannot Wait: Urge Your Senators to Fulfill their Constitutional Responsibility
The United States Constitution states that the President “shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to . . . nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint . . . Judges of the Supreme Court” (U.S. Const. art. II, sect. 2). By refusing to even consider a nomination, the Senate is violating the Constitution because it is interfering with President Obama’s explicit power, and it is failing to carry out its Constitutional responsibility. Ignoring the president’s nomination for political gain is also in opposition to our Jewish tradition, which requires people to act for the greater good: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when?” Rabbi Hillel (Pirke Avot 1:14).
