How is Two Thousand Sixteen like Nineteen Eighty-Four?
Two Thousand Sixteen is like Nineteen Eighty-Four because just like the Orwellian government in that novel, Congress entitles bills with names that are the exact opposite of the bills’ true intent. For example, The Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016 actually decreases children’s access to essential programs.
Just the Facts
- More than 47 million Americans live in food-insecure households, homes where there is not enough money to provide basic food needs.
- 15.3 million children live in food-insecure households.
- Children in food-insecure households are not only hungry, but are at increased risk of developmental and health problems, long-term health complications, and poor educational outcomes.
- Only 1 in 6 children who are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals receives meals over the summer.
- It is time for Congress to reauthorize child nutrition programs, such as: The National Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, The Summer Food Service Program, The Afterschool Snack and Meal Program, The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.
- Congress is now considering The Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016. This Act will make changes in the current law that will decrease access to essential programs. What should you do?
