The City of New York is offering a picture ID to all residents, regardless of citizenship. For vulnerable populations, a government-issued identification card is a lifeline to opportunities and services guaranteed for citizens. But there is a reason for U.S. citizens to get an IDNYC card. A famous story of resistance in World War II tells of how the King of Denmark declared that if Nazis compelled Danish Jews and Jewish refugees to wear a gold star, he and everyone in the country would. If everyone wore a star, Jews could not be separated out. It is a powerful way for society to stand with and aid at-risk groups.
The JCC Manhattan will be signing people up from Monday June 5-Friday, June 9, and then Monday, June 12-Thursday, June 15, 10:00AM-6:00PM with a lunch break from 12:00PM-1:00PM. Registrations are necessary and can be made by calling 311 or www.nyc.gov/IDNYC.
Plus, there are a lot of really wonderful benefits to having an IDNYC card, including free or discounted admission to museums and movie theaters. Learn more at registration.
