Death and Dying in Art, Cinema, and Literature

Rabbi Juliana S. Karol leads a three-part series that explores how culture shapes our conceptions of death as a critical part of life, and how Jewish tradition speaks to these themes. Using one book, one movie, and a series of works of visual art, we will explore how our own ideas and experiences might align with or differ from depictions of death and dying.

Please note: The first session will focus on visual art; no pre-work is required. Just bring a pencil and an open mind! The second session will require familiarity with Bruce Joel Rubin’s 1993 film My Life, starring Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman. The third and final session will explore Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. Please read the book beforehand and bring your copy (or your e-reader) with you for the discussion.
