Historian Jenna Weissman Joselit’s latest book, Set in Stone, traces the fascinating story of America’s embrace of the Ten Commandments. The two tablets were not just a theological imperative in the New World; they provoked heated discussions around key issues such as national identity, inclusion, and pluralism. Joselit, the Charles E. Smith Professor of Judaic Studies at The George Washington University and a columnist at Tablet, will be joined onstage by our congregant Rabbi David Ellenson for a discussion of the unique place the Decalogue has come to occupy in American life. Rabbi David Ellenson is Chancellor Emeritus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and Director of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University.
