A Bride for One Night: Seduction, Devotion, and the Rabbinic Imagination

Tue, May 5, 2015 • 7:15 PM - 8:30 PM

Board Room (Congregation Rodeph Sholom)
|Recurring Event (See all)

Magical caves, declarations from heaven….and strong women’s voices. And you thought Harry Potter had it all!

Join Rabbi Sari Laufer for a chance to study some of the Talmudic stories featured in Ruth Calderon’s book, A Bride For One Night. Each session will focus on a single story, Calderon’s analysis of it, and further material to help us read deeply into the tale. Fans of Talmud and literature alike are cordially invited (fans of neither are also invited!). No previous knowledge of Talmud or Bible is required.

Dr. Ruth Calderon became a bit of an Israeli celebrity when, upon being sworn into the Israeli Parliament, she taught Talmud on the Knesset floor. Her argument was that the text was the heritage of the entire Jewish people. Taking that to heart, she recently published A Bride for One Night: Talmud Tales, offering a fascinating window into some of the liveliest and most colorful stories in the Talmud. One reviewer called Calderon’s book: “A welcome step in encouraging Jews of all stripes to engage with texts that hold values we wish to live by, and to find those values there.”
