In 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) called on Hollywood figures to testify about alleged communist propaganda in American films. Blacklisted explores the intersection of politics, art, culture, and social dynamics during Hollywood’s Red Scare through photographs, objects, and film.
Personal stories from the blacklisted “Hollywood Ten,” members of Congress, and film executives reveal different views of what it means to be a patriotic American. The exhibition also examines how Broadway and New York’s theater community responded at a time when art and artistic expression were no longer protected.
CRS Outings is made possible by generous support from Marcia and David Lavipour, and Maxine Schweitzer.
