“This is the city of dreamers and time and again it’s the place where the greatest dream of all, the American dream, has been tested and has triumphed.”

Over 700,000 undocumented immigrants in the United States arrived here as children and were raised in this country. The Obama administration created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an immigration policy that allows undocumented immigrants who meet certain criteria to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit. These qualifying individuals, known as DREAMers, participate more fully as members of society in the country that has served as their homeland.
As the Obama administration comes to a close, DREAMers are in a vulnerable position; they have registered with the government, providing their names and contact information. The incoming administration promised during the campaign to deport all undocumented immigrants. If it follows through, DREAMers can be easily found and deported to a country of origin they do not even remember – all because they registered with the government in order to work and contribute to society. Such a result is wrongheaded and unjust. As Jews, we are commanded to protect the strangers in our land. (Leviticus 19:33-34)
