E-Advocacy for May: Food Insecurity

Posted on

Taking a page from Marie Antoinette’s book on compassionate leadership, the House of Representative is telling our most vulnerable Americans to starve.

Did you know that 45.4 million people in America cannot afford the food they need to survive? The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) is part of the Farm Bill, which is set to expire on September 30, 2018. SNAP helps stave off hunger and food insecurity. Almost 70% of SNAP families have at least one child and more than 25% are families with an elderly or disabled family member.

The current House draft of the Farm Bill would restrict or eliminate access to SNAP benefits for millions of people with changes such as:

  • Requiring participation in work-related activities as a precondition for receiving SNAP;
  • Expanding work requirements to cover more people, including people up to 59 years of age and those with children over six years old, and
  • Narrowing states’ flexibility to adjust eligibility requirements according to circumstances within the state.

Those most negatively impacted are people who have unpredictable work schedules, live in areas with major obstacles to employment, and don’t earn a living wage.

Congress just gave a big tax break to corporations and multimillionaires; now it wants to grab food off the tables of struggling families. Click on this link to tell your members of Congress to protect SNAP and Americans who need this important anti-poverty program to survive.

    • Once you’ve entered that, you should be dialed in and able to hear services.
