Congregation Rodeph Sholom has gone “virtual”—all of our services and programs are streaming online only. But that doesn’t mean we have stopped providing spaces for us to learn, grow, and connect together! We are still here for you, and still ready to be your congregation—your spiritual home—even in these uncertain times.

Most of our virtual events will require registration and/or the use of a passwordAn added benefit of registering ahead of time is that you will receive an email reminder and have the option to add the event to your personal calendar. Please refer to your weekly CRS Live email for information about how to access events that require a password.

Together in Faith, Together in Heart: An Interfaith Exploration of Jewish and Christian Wisdom

It is common to view these two faiths as walled off, unrelated enterprises. Differences in ideology, scriptural language, and practice often makes us think of Judaism and Christianity as independent traditions.

But all faiths are human faiths, and there are many connections between these strands. Christianity started as a reform movement in Judaism and many aspects of Jewish practice and belief were re-contextualized in the formation of Christianity. This gathering aims to explore the commonalities and differences, hopefully guiding us toward fresh ideas to animate us as faith seekers and keep both traditions relevant to our lives.

All are welcome to join a bi-weekly study of Jewish and Christian traditions and texts, facilitated by Mark Gilman (son of CRS Congregant Maxine Borowitz), and featuring offerings from Rabbi Ben Spratt and Reverend Micah Bucey of Judson Memorial Church.

What Matters presents: Dying Doesn’t Feel Like What I’m Doing
Jan 31 @ 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Documentary Screening and Conversation with Director Paula Weiman-Kelman

Presented by the What Matters: Caring Conversations about End of Life programs at Congregation Rodeph Sholom & Central Synagogue

What Matters is an initiative in the Jewish community of New York that highlights the importance of advance care planning.

Paula Weiman-Kelman’s moving documentary, Dying Doesn’t Feel Like What I’m Doing, celebrates the life of Rachel Cowan—a beloved rabbi and influential mindfulness teacher, who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Living each day fully, she turned dying into an opportunity to experience gratitude.

Paula will join us live from Israel for a conversation with Rabbi Jacqueline Koch Ellenson about the experience of filming this intimate portrait of Cowan’s final year. Following the discussion, Rabbi Nicole Auerbach will join the conversation, delving into personal and religious perspectives on advance care. A link to watch the documentary will be made available prior to this event for all registrants.

Paula Weiman-Kelman is veteran documentary filmmaker known for moving portraits of inspiring women. Her first film Rites of Passage was a portrait of the feisty Israeli feminist icon and peace activist Alice Shalvi. Twenty years later she revisited her subject in The Re-annotated Alice.
