That every Israeli in New York feels embraced, understood, and never alone. The Hug Center is not just a project — it is a keeper of Israeli identity abroad, ensuring our children, families, and elders remain connected to their roots, proud of their heritage, and part of the Jewish future.

How It Began
When I first arrived in New York as a young psychology student, I thought my stay would be temporary. Years later, I was raising children far from family, I longed for a true home — a place of songs, language, and belonging where the Israeli experience was understood.
On October 7, 2023, that longing became urgent. The grief and isolation Israelis felt abroad made it clear: we need each other. Out of this moment, the Hug Center was born — to ensure that no Israeli in New York has to carry it all alone.
Building Belonging
Today, the Hug Center is more than an organization — it is the home away from home I once searched for. With 23 programs for families, children, teens, women, and older adults, we provide emotional support, cultural connection, and a shared sense of belonging.
Without a place like this, too many risk losing their connection — children without Hebrew, teens without Jewish identity, parents without support, elders isolated. The Hug Center fills this gap, standing as a shield against disconnection, keeping Israeli identity strong abroad and ensuring those who return to Israel do so rooted and connected.

איך זה התחיל
כשהגעתי לניו יורק כסטודנטית צעירה לפסיכולוגיה חשבתי שהשהות כאן תהיה זמנית. שנים אחר כך, כשכבר גידלתי ילדים רחוק מהמשפחה, כמהתי לבית אמיתי — מקום של קהילה, שפה ושייכות, שבו מבינים את החוויה הישראלית.
ב־7 באוקטובר 2023 הכמיהה הזאת הפכה לדחופה. הכאב והבדידות שחשו ישראלים בחו״ל הראו לנו עד כמה אנחנו זקוקים זה לזה. מתוך הרגע הזה נולד מרכז חיבוק ישראלי — כדי להבטיח שאף ישראלי בניו יורק לא יישאר לשאת את הכול לבד.
בונים שייכות
היום, המרכז הוא הרבה יותר מארגון — הוא הבית שחיפשתי לעצמי. עם 23 תוכניות למשפחות, ילדים, בני נוער, נשים ומבוגרים, אנחנו מעניקים תמיכה רגשית, חיבור תרבותי ותחושת שייכות.
מרכז חיבוק ישראלי עומד כמגן מפני ניתוק, ושומר על הזהות הישראלית חזקה גם בניו יורק , כדי שמי שחוזר לישראל יעשה זאת מחובר ובטוח בשורשיו. מרכז חיבוק ישראלי הוא שייכות. הוא מגן. הוא בית.

Our People
Erela Nornberg, LMFT, MA, MSc.
Founder and Manager
enornberg@crsnyc.org
Erela holds a Masters degree in Marriage and Family therapy and a master’s degree in psychology. Erela holds a certificate from the IPTAR psychoanalytic institute in child and adolescent psychotherapy.
Erela has more than 25 years of experience working with children in educational settings as well as with families. She currently works at the Jewish board providing MH support to child welfare. She is a licensed therapist in NY.

Maya is a licensed social worker with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tel Aviv University, specializing in social rights and policy change. Maya comes to New York with a background in social action from Israel and experience working in social services with individuals, families, and communities.
